3 SRT-H: A Hierarchical Framework for Autonomous Surgery via Language Conditioned Imitation Learning Research on autonomous surgery has largely focused on simple task automation in controlled environments. However, real-world surgical applications demand dexterous manipulation over extended durations and generalization to the inherent variability of human tissue. These challenges remain difficult to address using existing logic-based or conventional end-to-end learning approaches. To address this gap, we propose a hierarchical framework for performing dexterous, long-horizon surgical steps. Our approach utilizes a high-level policy for task planning and a low-level policy for generating robot trajectories. The high-level planner plans in language space, generating task-level or corrective instructions that guide the robot through the long-horizon steps and correct for the low-level policy's errors. We validate our framework through ex vivo experiments on cholecystectomy, a commonly-practiced minimally invasive procedure, and conduct ablation studies to evaluate key components of the system. Our method achieves a 100\% success rate across eight unseen ex vivo gallbladders, operating fully autonomously without human intervention. This work demonstrates step-level autonomy in a surgical procedure, marking a milestone toward clinical deployment of autonomous surgical systems. 14 authors · May 15 3
- SRTransGAN: Image Super-Resolution using Transformer based Generative Adversarial Network Image super-resolution aims to synthesize high-resolution image from a low-resolution image. It is an active area to overcome the resolution limitations in several applications like low-resolution object-recognition, medical image enhancement, etc. The generative adversarial network (GAN) based methods have been the state-of-the-art for image super-resolution by utilizing the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based generator and discriminator networks. However, the CNNs are not able to exploit the global information very effectively in contrast to the transformers, which are the recent breakthrough in deep learning by exploiting the self-attention mechanism. Motivated from the success of transformers in language and vision applications, we propose a SRTransGAN for image super-resolution using transformer based GAN. Specifically, we propose a novel transformer-based encoder-decoder network as a generator to generate 2x images and 4x images. We design the discriminator network using vision transformer which uses the image as sequence of patches and hence useful for binary classification between synthesized and real high-resolution images. The proposed SRTransGAN outperforms the existing methods by 4.38 % on an average of PSNR and SSIM scores. - SRTK: A Toolkit for Semantic-relevant Subgraph Retrieval Information retrieval based knowledge base question answering (KBQA) first retrieves a subgraph to reduce search space, then reasons on the subgraph to select answer entities. Existing approaches have three issues that impede the retrieval of such subgraphs. Firstly, there is no off-the-shelf toolkit for semantic-relevant subgraph retrieval. Secondly, existing methods are knowledge-graph-dependent, resulting in outdated knowledge graphs used even in recent studies. Thirdly, previous solutions fail to incorporate the best available techniques for entity linking or path expansion. In this paper, we present SRTK, a user-friendly toolkit for semantic-relevant subgraph retrieval from large-scale knowledge graphs. SRTK is the first toolkit that streamlines the entire lifecycle of subgraph retrieval across multiple knowledge graphs. - i-SRT: Aligning Large Multimodal Models for Videos by Iterative Self-Retrospective Judgment Aligning Video Large Multimodal Models (VLMMs) face challenges such as modality misalignment and verbose responses. Although iterative approaches such as self-rewarding or iterative direct preference optimization (DPO) recently showed a significant improvement in language model alignment, particularly on reasoning tasks, self-aligned models applied to large video-language models often result in lengthy and irrelevant responses. To address these challenges, we propose a novel method that employs self-retrospection to enhance both response generation and preference modeling, and call iterative self-retrospective judgment (i-SRT). By revisiting and evaluating already generated content and preference in loop, i-SRT improves the alignment between textual and visual modalities, reduce verbosity, and enhances content relevance. Our empirical evaluations across diverse video question answering benchmarks demonstrate that i-SRT significantly outperforms prior arts. - Teaching Language Models to Self-Improve by Learning from Language Feedback Aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) with human intentions and values is crucial yet challenging. Current methods primarily rely on human preferences, which are costly and insufficient in capturing nuanced feedback expressed in natural language. In this paper, we present Self-Refinement Tuning (SRT), a method that leverages model feedback for alignment, thereby reducing reliance on human annotations. SRT uses a base language model (e.g., Tulu2) to generate initial responses, which are critiqued and refined by a more advanced model (e.g., GPT-4-Turbo). This process enables the base model to self-evaluate and improve its outputs, facilitating continuous learning. SRT further optimizes the model by learning from its self-generated feedback and refinements, creating a feedback loop that promotes model improvement. Our empirical evaluations demonstrate that SRT significantly outperforms strong baselines across diverse tasks and model sizes. When applied to a 70B parameter model, SRT increases the win rate from 9.6\% to 25.8\% on the AlpacaEval 2.0 benchmark, surpassing well-established systems such as GPT-4-0314, Claude 2, and Gemini. - RePAST: Relative Pose Attention Scene Representation Transformer The Scene Representation Transformer (SRT) is a recent method to render novel views at interactive rates. Since SRT uses camera poses with respect to an arbitrarily chosen reference camera, it is not invariant to the order of the input views. As a result, SRT is not directly applicable to large-scale scenes where the reference frame would need to be changed regularly. In this work, we propose Relative Pose Attention SRT (RePAST): Instead of fixing a reference frame at the input, we inject pairwise relative camera pose information directly into the attention mechanism of the Transformers. This leads to a model that is by definition invariant to the choice of any global reference frame, while still retaining the full capabilities of the original method. Empirical results show that adding this invariance to the model does not lead to a loss in quality. We believe that this is a step towards applying fully latent transformer-based rendering methods to large-scale scenes. 3 authors · Apr 3, 2023
